A massage is, if performed by a trained professional, a pleasant experience designed to encourage relaxation. If you live near Wash Park, in Denver, there are several therapy studios to choose from and they offer a variety of services. Each type of massage therapy uses different techniques depending on their origin and what's suitable for the client. If you have never received a massage before, you may want to look in to the kind of therapy that's suitable as there's more to a massage that the typical kneading and stroking seen on television.

Swedish Massages

A Swedish massage is the most popular therapy today, and what most people have in mind when they think of a massage. Techniques involve the use of hands and elbows, with a lot of kneading, tapping and stretching involved.

A Swedish massage is designed to relax the entire body, and may increase the level of oxygen in the blood. It has also been linked with an increase in lymphocyte production, which means it can boost the immune system and help you fight off illnesses.

Hot Stone Massages

A hot stone massage is a very deep treatment first used by Native Americans, however the style used today is known as LaStone Therapy, coined by Mary Nelson. The masseur uses hot, sterilized basalt stones (after giving you a Swedish massage) and then massages you with a hot stone in hand. The size of the basalt is relative to the muscles being treated. Sometimes the practitioner of this therapy can leave hot stones on your spine, belly, in your hands.

This service requires specialised products, a lot of preparation, and can run a lot longer than a normal massage. All of these factors may affect the price, however ultimately it is up to the individual studio. On top of this, a hot stone massage is not advisable if you are pregnant, or if you have diabetes or high blood pressure.

Deep Tissue Massages

Deep tissue massages are more intense and deeper than the therapies mentioned above. They focus on chronic pains and injuries, as they get down to the deeper muscles and fascia. This type of therapy uses similar techniques to the regular massage, however with more pressure and slower movements.

This therapy is particularly useful for sports related injuries such as strains and torn ligaments, as chronic muscle tension causes adhesions, and it targets this painful tissue, improving circulation and reducing inflammation. It may be best for chronic aches and pains, as this is where it's most effective.

Whatever massage you're looking for, or even if you're new to massage therapy, there is guaranteed to be a service that suits your needs perfectly. Before you book an appointment, you may need to ask about the oils or products used to ensure that you aren't allergic to anything-you may be best with organic products.

Another issue is whether you have skin conditions that could be aggravated by pressure, oils or abrasion-if this is the case you should avoid sensitive areas and consult your masseur.
